The Kua number formula for men subtracts rather than adds. This is a structurally different calculation from the one used for women, not just a different final number. This page uses the verified male formula exclusively, with the Li Chun solar cutoff built in, so your result is accurate even if your birthday falls in the narrow window most calculators get wrong.

Why the Male Kua Formula Works Differently?
In Eight Mansions Feng Shui, male and female energy cycles are treated as distinct systems, which is reflected directly in how the Kua number is calculated. For men, the final step is a subtraction. Here, your Kua Factor is taken away from a fixed base number. For women, the same step is an addition. This isn’t a stylistic difference; it produces genuinely different results even for people born in the same year.
This is worth knowing upfront, because it means a “unisex” or simplified calculator that doesn’t ask for gender is almost certainly producing inaccurate results for at least one half of its users.
How to Calculate Your Kua Number as a Male?
The calculation has two steps:
Step 1 β Find your Kua Factor. Add the last two digits of your birth year together. If the result is a two-digit number, add those digits again until you reach a single digit.
Example: born in 1991 β 9 + 1 = 10 β 1 + 0 = 1. Your Kua Factor is 1.
Step 2 β Apply the male formula.
- Born before 2000: subtract your Kua Factor from 10
- Born in or after 2000: subtract your Kua Factor from 9
Continuing the example: born 1991, before 2000 β 10 β 1 = 9. Kua number 9, East Group.
If your Kua Factor is 0 (which happens for certain birth years), treat it as 9 in the subtraction β the cycle wraps around rather than ending at zero.
The Easiest Place to Get the Male Formula Wrong
Most calculation errors for men come from one specific spot: using 10 as the base number for someone born in 2000 or later, when the correct base for that period is 9. This single-digit difference shifts your entire final Kua number.
This matters because, unlike a typo you’d notice, an incorrect Kua number still looks completely valid β it’s still a number from 1 to 9, with its own set of directions and explanations attached. There’s no built-in way to tell from the result alone that the wrong formula was applied, which is why getting the year cutoff right at the calculation stage matters more than people expect.
However, our Kua Number calculator has been designed in such a way that it has accounted for all the calculation logic.
The Li Chun Cutoff and Why It Affects Men Born in Late January
Feng Shui’s calendar year doesn’t reset on January 1st β it resets on Li Chun, the solar start of spring, which lands around February 4th but isn’t fixed to a single date every year.
If you were born between January 15 and February 15, this matters directly to you: if your birthday falls before that year’s Li Chun date, your Feng Shui birth year is actually the previous calendar year, not the one on your ID. Calculating with the wrong year in this window produces an incorrect Kua Factor, and from there, an incorrect final number.
This calculator checks your exact birth date against the real Li Chun date for your birth year and will prompt you to confirm before/after if you’re born inside this window β so the calculation is accurate at the source, not just at the formula step.
What Happens If Your Result Is Kua 5?
Some men calculate a Kua Factor that results in exactly 5 β and Kua 5 is unusual because it has no fixed compass direction of its own in the classical system. For males, established Ba Zhai practice is to use the direction set belonging to Kua 2 instead.
Your actual Kua number stays 5 β that’s still your core identity in the system β but the practical guidance on which direction to sleep or work toward follows the Kua 2 set. This calculator displays both: your real number, and a clear explanation of which substitute directions apply to you and why, rather than silently swapping your number without telling you.
Your Group and Your Four Directions
Once calculated, your Kua number places you into one of two groups:
| Group | Male Kua Numbers | Auspicious Directions |
|---|---|---|
| East Group | 1, 3, 4, 9 | North, South, East, Southeast |
| West Group | 2 (and 5β2), 6, 7, 8 | West, Northwest, Southwest, Northeast |
Within your group, four directions support you specifically β one tied to career and prosperity, one to health and recovery, one to relationships, and one to personal growth. The remaining four are generally considered less favourable for activities like sleeping or working at a desk.
FAQ
Why do men subtract and women add in the Kua formula? This comes from how the Eight Mansions system maps male and female energy cycles in opposite directions around the same base sequence. It’s a structural feature of the classical formula, not an arbitrary convention.
I was born in 2000 exactly β do I use the before-2000 or after-2000 formula? The after-2000 formula applies, since it covers the year 2000 itself, not just years following it. Use 9 as your base number, not 10.
Can my Kua number be 0 after subtracting? No β if the subtraction would result in 0, the result wraps around to 9 instead. This is built into the formula’s cyclical structure.
Does my Kua number change as I get older? No. It’s fixed for life based on your birth year and gender, and doesn’t change with age or any life event.
My birthday is January 20th β should I check the Li Chun rule? Yes. Any birthday between January 15 and February 15 falls inside the affected window and should be checked against that year’s actual Li Chun date, since the Feng Shui year may differ from your calendar birth year.
